Semi-Permanent Makeup: A Beginner’s Guide Before You Book

Imagine waking up with defined brows that do not smudge in the heat or wash off at the gym. That is the appeal of semi-permanent makeup. For people who spend time every morning filling in sparse brows, or who simply want to look put-together with less effort, it can be a real time-saver.

Because semi-permanent makeup places pigment in the skin, it is a bigger decision than a manicure or a lash fill. This beginner’s guide explains what it is, how long it lasts, what healing is really like, and the questions to ask before you book.

What is semi-permanent makeup?

Semi-permanent makeup (sometimes called cosmetic tattooing or micropigmentation) uses fine needles to deposit pigment into the upper layers of the skin. It is most often used to enhance brows, but it can also be used to define the lash line or add color to the lips, depending on what your artist offers.

Unlike a traditional tattoo, the pigment is placed more superficially and is designed to fade gradually. That is why it is called "semi-permanent": the results soften over time and are usually maintained with periodic touch-ups.

Is it right for you?

Semi-permanent makeup can be a good fit if you:

It may not be the right time if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin condition or irritation in the area, are prone to keloid scarring, are taking blood-thinning medication, or have a medical condition that affects healing. In those cases, talk to your doctor first and share that information with your artist. A responsible artist will ask health questions before your appointment, and may recommend waiting.

The consultation

A good semi-permanent makeup appointment starts with conversation, not needles. During the consultation, you can expect to talk about:

Do not be shy about asking for changes to the drawn shape. Once you are happy with the outline, the procedure can begin.

How to prepare

What healing looks like

Healing is the part that surprises first-timers most, so it helps to know what is normal. Everyone heals a little differently, but a typical timeline looks like this:

Days 1–7: bold and dark

Right after the procedure, the color looks noticeably darker and sharper than the final result. Mild redness or swelling may appear and usually settles in a day or two.

Week 2: flaking and fading

The area may become dry and flaky. As the skin flakes, the color can look patchy or much lighter, sometimes almost gone. This is normal; the pigment often "comes back" as the skin settles.

Weeks 3–6: settling

The color gradually reappears and softens into its healed shade. It generally takes around four to six weeks before you can judge the true result.

The follow-up visit

Because skin holds pigment unevenly at first, a follow-up or perfecting session is commonly scheduled several weeks after the first appointment to fill in any light spots and refine the shape. Ask your artist about timing and whether it is included.

Aftercare basics

Always follow the specific aftercare instructions you are given. General guidelines usually include:

How long does it last?

Results commonly last from about one to a few years, depending on your skin type, sun exposure, skincare routine and the technique used. Oily skin, frequent exfoliation and strong sun tend to fade pigment faster. Many people book a color refresh every year or two to keep the look crisp.

Sun protection is one of the best ways to extend your results. In a sunny climate like south Louisiana, a hat and sunscreen around (not on) healing skin, and on healed skin afterwards, make a difference.

Questions to ask before you book

Semi-permanent makeup FAQ

Does it hurt?

Most people describe a scratchy or tapping sensation rather than sharp pain, but comfort levels vary. Ask your artist how comfort is managed during the procedure.

Can I wear makeup on top later?

Once the area has fully healed, you can usually wear makeup as normal, though many people find they need far less of it.

The bottom line

Semi-permanent makeup can save you time every morning and give you brows that stay put through heat, humidity and workouts. Go in prepared: have a thorough consultation, be honest about your health history, expect a dark-then-faded healing phase, and plan for a follow-up visit. Semi-permanent makeup is listed among the services at Bella’s Beauty Bar; see the services page and the booking policy, and send a message on Instagram if you have questions before booking. If you prefer something temporary, lash extensions are another way to look polished without daily makeup.
