Your First Lash Extension Appointment: What to Expect

Lash extensions are one of those beauty services people often wish they had tried sooner. Waking up with defined, curled lashes and skipping mascara every morning is a small luxury that saves real time. But if you have never had them done, the idea of lying still with someone working near your eyes can feel a little intimidating.

The good news is that a lash appointment is usually calm and comfortable, and many clients find it relaxing enough to doze off. This guide walks you through every step: how to prepare, what happens during the appointment, how long it takes, and how to look after your new lashes so they last.

What lash extensions are

Lash extensions are individual synthetic fibers attached to your own natural lashes, one at a time, with a lash adhesive. They are not strip lashes and they are not glued to your skin or eyelid. Because each extension is attached to a single natural lash, they shed naturally along with your own lashes as part of the normal growth cycle.

Extensions come in different lengths, thicknesses and curls, and they can be applied as one extension per lash (classic), as small fans of several very fine extensions (volume), or as a mix of both (hybrid). If you are not sure which style you want, read our guide to classic vs. volume vs. hybrid lashes before you book.

How to prepare for your appointment

A little preparation helps the adhesive bond well and makes your set last longer:

It is also a good idea to read the booking and cancellation policy so you know how far in advance to reschedule if something comes up.

What happens during the appointment

1. A quick consultation

Your lash artist will ask about the look you want: natural and subtle, a little more dramatic, or something in between. They will also look at your natural lashes, because the length and thickness of your own lashes determine how long and full the extensions can safely be.

2. Getting comfortable

You will lie back on a lash bed. Your lower lashes are taped or covered with a soft under-eye pad so they do not get attached to the upper lashes.

3. Application

With your eyes closed the entire time, the artist isolates one natural lash at a time and attaches an extension. You will feel light touches, but it should not hurt. If anything stings, waters or feels uncomfortable, tell your artist right away so they can adjust.

4. Finishing

Once the set is complete, the artist checks that no lashes are stuck together, brushes them into place, and removes the pads. Then you get to see the result.

How long does it take?

A first full set takes longer than any later visit. Classic sets often take around an hour and a half to two hours, while fuller volume sets can take longer. Fills, which replace extensions that have shed, are shorter. Plan your day so you are not rushing, and choose the matching service when you book online so enough time is reserved.

The first 24 hours

The adhesive continues to settle after you leave. To give your lashes the best start:

After that, regular gentle care is what keeps them looking good. Our full guide to lash extension aftercare covers cleansing, brushing, sleeping and makeup.

How long do lash extensions last?

Extensions last as long as the natural lash they are attached to. Everyone sheds a few lashes every day, so a set gradually thins out over time. Most people book a fill every two to three weeks to replace what has shed and keep the set looking full. If you wait much longer, you may need a new full set instead of a fill.

Is it normal to feel the lashes at first?

Some people notice a light, unfamiliar feeling for the first day or two, simply because there is something new on their lashes. This usually fades quickly. However, ongoing itching, redness, swelling or burning is not normal. If that happens, contact your lash artist and consider seeing a medical professional, especially if symptoms are getting worse.

Common first-timer questions

Will extensions damage my natural lashes?

When extensions are matched to the strength of your natural lashes and applied one lash at a time, they should not harm healthy lashes. Damage usually comes from extensions that are too heavy, lashes stuck together, or pulling and picking at them at home.

Can I wear mascara?

You generally do not need it, and most mascaras make extensions clump and are hard to remove. If you want extra drama, ask for a fuller style instead.

Can I get them removed?

Yes. Professional removal uses a remover that dissolves the adhesive so extensions slide off without pulling on your natural lashes. Never pull them out yourself.

Ready for your first set?

Your first lash appointment is mostly about relaxing while your artist does the detailed work. Come with clean lashes, share the look you want, keep them dry for the first day and plan a fill in two to three weeks.
